An Introduction to Robotics as a Service

What is RaaS?
RaaS is setup in a similar way to pay as you go subscription based service models, software as a service (SaaS) and big data as a service (BDaaS). Those who sign up for RaaS get the benefits of robotic process automation by leasing robotic devices and accessing a cloud-based subscription service rather than purchasing the robotic equipment outright. As a result, removing the need to purchase robotic equipment and handle the additional needs of owning it such as maintenance.
Why Become a RaaS Provider?
There is a growing demand for RaaS in the market. Historically purchasing and operating robotic equipment has been simple however, due to the expanding capabilities of robotics rooting from advancements of AI and machine learning, supporting robotic equipment has become more challenging.
Robotic equipment providers have the ability to make those ongoing investments remotely through cloud computing, so providers can monitor and manage robots themselves. This has led to an explosion of RaaS providers.
A necessary part of this model is that RaaS providers develop an end-to-end solution for the customer, including software and any additional service with the robot. Software may allow users to monitor the robots (whether onsite or remotely), manage their movements if necessary, and coordinate multiple robots simultaneously. Services may include customer support, maintenance and repairs, software and hardware updates, and more.
It is critical for providers to define RaaS solutions that are effective based around the core product offering.
Potential challenges of becoming RaaS Provider
- Gaps in technical knowledge
- Upfront cost of infrastructure
- Lack of capacity to deliver the services

Exploring RaaS Business Models
Time-based leases: With time-based RaaS models, customers lease a robot from a robotics company for a specific period or term, i.e. a weekly or monthly basis.
Task-based leases: With task-based RaaS models, customers lease a robot and pay the robotics company based on how many tasks the robot performs.
Robotics as a service has become more popular than ever and to help us determine where we deliver our service, we would like to invite you to express your interest in RaaS. Please send us an email by clicking the button below.
