Renowned Salford-based craft brewery, Marble Beers, turns to automation to help improve efficiencies and optimise their canning line.

The Challenge

Often causing bottlenecks on the canning line, the manual weighing of cans was the first step that came to mind during Head Brewer Joseph Ince’s consultation with the team at NERIC.

This was a time-intensive, yet important, task to make sure each can met the high standards of quality for their delicious beers. Automation would enable Marble Beers to increase productivity and consistency in the process and allow them to free up their staff to work on more interesting tasks in the brewery.

The Solution

Through the Research England programme at NERIC, Marble Beers accessed funded consultancy investigating off-the-shelf and bespoke automated weighing solutions for their site in Salford. It was essential that the solutions identified had the ability to weigh all products directly off the production line, with no human interaction, equipped with an automated rejection system to detect and reject underweight products. The findings also included a roadmap for integration, solution providers and costings.

“We found NERIC very useful and easy to work with. The programme highlighted equipment we were unaware of that could help Marble Beers increase productivity. The best thing about the partnership was how informative it was; it helped us expand our knowledge base beyond what we could have done ourselves.”
